Summer 2011: Let's Talk Health!

The more I talk to people around town, the more I am convinced that 2011 is the year of “health.” I touched on this a bit in the last issue but I want to re-iterate it because health is such an important topic. And, I for one, have decided to wholeheartedly jump on the bandwagon.

I am determined to get healthy. I’m not necessarily aiming to lose weight (that will follow with making healthful choices), but rather getting my body and my family’s body well. This includes consuming things that are good for us and making sure that we are getting all the vitamins and nutrients we need to feel better. And, like I mentioned before, I want you to join me.

This issue is filled with ideas on sustaining a healthy lifestyle, such as the article on Ganoderma Lucidum. This is a medicinal herb that may help to prevent a number of ailments and is becoming more and more popular and very readily available. Our body may not necessarily need this herb, but by consuming it, we can only gain from all its naturally beneficial properties. For example, so many of us already
consume coffee on a daily basis right? Well, why not drink a coffee that tastes great, contains Ganoderma and is actually good for you? It’s mindful baby steps like these that will get us going in the right direction.

On page 16, the article “Natural Beauty,” talks about how women from around the world achieve beauty using natural elements. Our fast pace lifestyles make it difficult to go all natural, but we can always look for ways to incorporate some of these beauty tips. One small step, for instance, would be to buy products that contain natural ingredients instead of chemical filled ones.

We’ve also included some recipes that are not only delicious but easy to make and good for you. The Cocoa Espresso Waffles, on page 32, are made with whole grain pastry flour and contain only the egg whites. The White Wine Apricot Syrup is so exquisite and also very simple to prepare.

Just because we are being mindful of our wellness, doesn’t mean we can’t splurge every once in a while. But, if we do it in moderation and stay on track the majority of the time, we are going to do just fine. I believe that getting healthy is a process that takes getting used to because it really is a total change of mindset and lifestyle. If we try to eliminate the things we love cold turkey, we may be setting  ourselves up for failure. Look around town, there are plenty of resources to help you along and if it helps you, bring a friend along for the journey and encourage each other.

As always I wish you the best and I hope that you will continue to keep in touch with me about anything and everything that’s on your mind.
