Spring 2011: Welcome Spring!

Last month, I scheduled a check-up with my family doctor. I hadn’t been feeling well and decided that perhaps it was time to look into why I was feeling so fatigued, irritated and stressed out. My doctor sat patiently listening to me go on and on about my symptoms.

Last month, I scheduled a check-up with my family doctor. I hadn’t been feeling well and decided that perhaps it was time to look into why I was feeling so fatigued, irritated and stressed out. My doctor sat patiently listening to me go on and on about my symptoms. As he took my vitals, he asked, “What things are you doing for yourself to stay healthy, to keep from becoming sick?” My initial reply was, “Huh?”

“Prevention,” he said, “is easier than trying to cure something that is already rooted. If you apply certain preventive health strategies in your day to day life, you can avoid many ailments.” He made very valid point. His suggestions were geared towards becoming more active, eating well balanced meals and allowing myself time to de-stress.

I came to realize that my preventive health measures were nonexistent. I don’t take daily vitamin supplements, I don’t eat enough fruits and vegetables and I don’t work out often enough. I do, however, sit at my computer for hours without getting up to stretch.  I do skip meals (everyday, several in one day I might add). I do eat way too much junk food (with which I over compensate for skipping meals) and the list goes on.

I know I need to make healthier choices and there is no better time than the spring to start something new. The kiwi juice recipe on page 46 is a kick-start in my attempt to get healthy and drag you along for the ride. It’s just the right amount of tangy and sweet, so even the kids will love it.

The more I thought about it, the more I realized that this “preventive measures” concept could be applied to other areas of life as well; such as spiritual health. Much like our physical health, our spiritual health requires a lifestyle change in order to make an impact. Doing something for our spiritual health can often yield the most profound results and one thing that I am convinced of is that without a spiritual component, there is no real meaning to life.

With that in mind, and the fact that Lent is upon us and Easter is just around the corner, the article “Man Does Not Live by Bread Alone,” on page 8, explains the importance of becoming strengthened by our trial and tribulations and how Lent can be a time of renewal in our spiritual journey. I think you will also enjoy Shianne’s very inspiring story. She is a beautiful young lady with a strong determination not to let her condition alter the happy person she has always been (In the Blink of an Eye, page 20).

I hope that the stories we’ve included will uplift, inspire and strengthen you this spring. Remember that I love hearing from you, so send me an e-mail at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and let me know what’s on your mind.
