Commonly referred to as chuck wagons, roach coaches or taco trucks (we prefer changarritos), mobile food trucks seem to be popping up everywhere. They prepare everything from burritos and tacos, to shrimp cocktails and flautas, to great tasting barbeque and are an excellent replacement for your typical fast-food joint. Food trucks are convenient and, for the most part, less expensive than eating a huge meal at a restaurant. As the weather warms up, eating al fresco is also a nice change. Plus, who doesn’t love the homemade flavor changarritos offer?
We found a few between Las Cruces and El Paso that are worth sharing. But, we refuse to comment on which is our favorite because that would be like admitting we have a favorite child. You’ll just have to try them all, decide for yourself and let us know what you think!
Jesse’s KC BBQ
Located at the southern end of the Downtown Mall by the New Americas School on Thursdays and Fridays and at the Farmer’s Market on Saturdays, Jesse’s Kansas City style barbeque is a must try. He serves flavorful smoked chicken, brisket and pulled pork in sandwiches, burritos and as a platter with a great barbeque sauce. Jesse is the owner and a one man show. Jesse also offers catering!

Mariscos El Tiburon
Weekends at El Tiburon Mariscos literally rock with activity. Specializing in ceviche and shrimp cocktails, the changarrito parks next to the community center nestled at the entrance of Del Cerro, a little town between Mesquite and Vado on I-10. If you don’t make it there early chances are they’ll be out of ceviche. Open Wednesday thru Friday from 9am to 5pm. Weekends 9am to 2pm. You may want to call ahead!
Cocina Mexicana Express
Socorro is serving up the usual choices in Mexican food like delicious burritos and enchiladas. But, one bite of the carne asada torta and you’ll know why Socorro’s changarrito made our list. Perfectly seasoned, the flavor and texture of this torta tops our charts! She can be found at the Farmers’ Market on Saturdays and Wednesdays at the south end on Griggs St. or at the corner of Solano and California St.

Flautas El Menny
The orange changarrito is located in a very unlikely spot—the parking lot of a tire shop in Canutillo, TX. And, it’s about 35 minutes south of Las Cruces, but the drive is well worth it! The only two choices they offer on the menu are potato or shredded beef flautas. You can’t go wrong with either one! They come served with shredded cabbage, sliced tomatoes and three different types of sauces (red and chile sauces and guacamole). Upon request, they’ll even add pickled pork skins. Yummy! El Menny is only opened in the evenings from 5pm to 11pm daily.
